Recap of 2020
あけましておめでとうございます！ New Year Everyone!
2020年を無事に終えられましたね。日本にとっては素晴らしい年になるはずだったのに、結果としてここ数年で最も厳しい年となってしまいました。
I think we can all agree that we are glad to see the end of 2020! It was poised to be such an amazing year for Japan but ended up being one of the hardest in decades.
個人的には、日本にいられたことをとても幸せに思います。もちろんカナダは好きですが、私の家族と日本を家と呼べることが恵まれていることに何の疑いもありません。皆様と同じく、私たちも困難に対処し、安全についてより気を付けるようになりました。正直、この状況はもう長く続かないだろうとは思いますが、マスクを外し、またみんなで集まれる日がいつ来るのか、そしてSpringにとって、皆様の記憶に残るような大きなイベントを開催できる日がいつ来るのかは分かりません。
Personally speaking, I am very happy to have been in Japan during this time. I will always love Canada, but there’s no doubt in my mind that my family is blessed to call Japan home. Like many of you, we had to adapt to the challenges at hand and become more aware of our safety. I hope that one day soon we can remove our masks, and start having parties and large local events to create long-lasting memories for the entire Spring Learning Studio community.
私はまだ楽観的で、それはこれからも変わりません。なので、2020年の素晴らしい出来事を、一緒に振り返りましょう。まずはイベントについてです。I am still very optimistic, that will never change. So please come with me as we recap the great things about 2020.
1. 2019年クリスマスイベント – タイダイ染め 2019 Christmas Tie-Dye
2019年のことですが、2020年にも子供たちは自作のオリジナルTシャツを作ったので、こちらに関してもブログに載せることとしました。
当時のスタッフは何年もSpringにいた先生であり、皆様のことを知る手助けをしてくれました。皆様を大好きになるのに、そう時間はかかりませんでした。綱島一の英会話教室を引き継ぐことになるのだと、すぐに分かりました。カリキュラムでも、施設でも、スタッフでもありません。それは皆様のおかげなのです。このコミュニティのおかげです。人生でこのように素晴らしい人たちに恵まれていたので、私はクリスマスイベントをぜひとも楽しいものにしたかったのです。
最初の大きなイベントで多くを学び、次のタイダイ染めイベントの準備のために必要なものを手に入れました。コロナウイルスの脅威の中でも、すべて計画をし、実行する準備はできていました。楽観的でいた私は、状況はすぐに落ち着くだろうと、シャツを発注しました。2020年のクリスマスイベントで行う予定だったタイダイ染めは、3月に延期となりました。何が起きようとも、3月に行う予定ではいますが、鶴見川沿いでアウトドアイベントとして行う予定です。よく晴れた空のもと、子供たちが自慢できるようなカラフルなシャツを作るということに、とてもワクワクしています。
Yes, this was 2019, but since the kids received their handcrafted shirts in 2020 when they returned from their holidays, I have cheated and have included it in this blog post. My team at the time were teachers that had been at Spring for years and they were helping me get to know all of you. It didn’t take long before you became some of my favourite people. I quickly learned that I had taken over managing the best Eikaiwa in Tsunashima! It wasn’t because of the curriculum, it wasn’t because of the facility and it wasn’t even because of the teachers. It was because of you- the community. The gift of having such wonderful people in my life was exactly why I wanted to make the Christmas Tie-Dye Event such a fun one.
I learned a lot from my first big event and already had all the products ready for the next Spring Tie Dye Event. It was all planned and ready to go, even when people started to become weary of the virus. Yet I was optimistic that things would settle down so I ordered the shirts.
The 2020 Christmas Tie Dye event has now been postponed for March. No matter what happens between now and then, we will have it in March, except it will be held outdoors, next to the Tsurumi River. I am very excited about the idea of a beautiful day spent outside, making colourful shirts that the kids can proudly call their own.
2. ムービーナイト Hot Pot Movie Night for Adults
ご存じでない方もいらっしゃるでしょうが、私たちのコミュニティの中には、大人の生徒様もたくさんいらっしゃいます。Springを引き継いだ時、最大の目標はすべての生徒さんのつながりを作ることでした。ムービーナイトは元からあったイベントですが、大きなプロジェクターを用意し、食事の機会も設けることにしました。コロナウイルスの感染拡大前に、一年の計画はできていました。2か月ごとに大人の生徒様、そのほかの月で子供たちに、ムービーナイトを開催する予定でした。当初はすべての方にお楽しみいただけるようなムービーナイトを考えておりましたが、年齢を分けたほうがいいと判断しました。初めてのムービーナイトの後、食事を囲んでのムービーナイトを企画しました。そして、鍋を囲んでのムービーナイトを開催し、会話の弾む、笑顔溢れたイベントとなりました。
Some of our community are unaware that we have a lot of Adult Students as well as young learners. When I took over managing Spring Learning Studio, the ultimate plan was to create engaging experiences for all our students. Movie night was already a thing at Spring but we bought a projector and added delicious food to the event. The entire year was planned out before Covid19. We had planned to host Movie Night every 2nd month for the Adults and every other month for the children. At first, we tried to do an all-ages movie night but quickly found out that it would be better to separate the age groups. After our very first all-ages movie night, we introduced Movie Night for Adults with Dinner. For the inaugural Movie Night, we had a delicious hot pot dinner, great conversation and plenty of smiles.
ムービーナイトはいまだ再会できておりませんが、安全にできるようになる日を待っています。このイベントに参加できたことは、大切ない経験となりました。なるべく早く再開するために、3人ほどのより少ないグループでの開催を考えています。
Although we cannot bring back this event back just yet, we are anxiously waiting for the right time to do it safely. It was a cherished experience that I am very happy to have been a part of. We are also considering hosting smaller groups of three more in order to bring movie night back sooner.
3. 鶴見川沿いでのスケートボードイベント Urban Longboarding the Tsurumi River
Springで開催したイベントの中で、子供たちを鶴見川へと連れていき、スケートボードを体験させるイベントは、おそらく一番開催しやすいものでした。カナダにいたときは、いくつものイベントを開催し、スポーツスクールで子供たちに安全の基本について教えていました。イベントでは、Springにて集合し、みんなで鶴見川へと移動しました。鶴見川につくと、1キロほど滑って小さなスロープのある場所まで行き、お試し用のボードを使ってみました。私たちのボードを使った人もいれば、ご自身でお持ちのボードを使用した人もいました。ドローン撮影や、スケートボードの経験のあるスタッフもいました。このイベントがそれだけ楽しいものになった理由の一つとして、屋外でのイベントだったため、ウイルスの感染拡大を恐れる必要がなかったからです。何時間かスケートボードを楽しんだのち、Springまで戻り、参加された方にはそこでオリジナルTシャツをお渡しいたしました。
Taking the kids out for a fun day of longboarding by the river was probably the easiest event for Spring Learning Studio to host. Back in Canada I had hosted dozens of events and ran an athletic sports school where I taught children the basics of safety.
We all met at Spring Learning Studio and walked down to the Tsurumi River. Once we arrived at the river we skated about a kilometre or so until we arrived at a little slope where the students could test out one of our many demo boards. They either tried out our boards or they rode their own. We had a Drone Pilot filming and extra staff on hand that are experienced skateboarders. One of the reasons this event was so much fun was it was outdoors and it was a great opportunity for everyone to partake in an event that had no danger of virus spread. After a few hours of skating and a demonstration, we all went back to Spring where the students were given limited edition Urban Longboard shirts.
4. スケートボード作成イベント Let’s Build Skateboards!
鶴見川でのイベントの1か月後、私たちはスケートボードを作るイベントを行いました。このイベントで、少人数で行うという決まりを作りました。私たちは子供たちに一生の経験になるようなイベントに参加する機会を作りたいと思っていますが、安全を考慮しなければなりません。さらに私たちは滝イオンメディックを導入し、Springに通われる方の安全を高めました。こちらの記事もごらんください(Link)。適切な予防策が取れ、コロナウイルスの感染拡大が始まってから初めて、私たちは屋内イベントの計画を進められるようになりました。また、参加者を6人ずつの少人数のグループに分けました。この取り組みはとてもうまくいきました。このイベントでは、子供たちにスケートボードの組み立て方を教えました。それが終わると、一度スケートボードを解体し、子供たちが自分たちで組み立てなおしました。見ていてとても興味深かったです。皆様とても上手でした。
The month following the Tsurumi River cruise event we held a skateboard-building event. For this event, we decided to hold our events with smaller groups. We wanted everyone to have a chance of taking part in events where kids can learn life-long lessons but were adamant about keeping things safe. Furthermore, we invested in the Taki ION Medic to further increase safety at Spring Learning Studio. You can check out more information about this at this link- (HERE).
Once we had taken these proper precautions, we started to plan our first indoor event since the outbreak of Covid-19. We held the events for 2 groups with a maximum of 6 students. This worked very well. For the skateboard-building event, we taught the kids how to assemble skateboards from the ground up. Then, when they were completed, I took the boards apart to show how they had been built and asked students to re-assemble them themselves. This was very interesting to watch. The students did well!
5. ハロウィンイベント Halloween T-Shirt Making and Photo Shoot Event
このイベントも、少人数のグループに分けて行いました。20名の方に参加いただきました。外でお待ちいただき、順番が回ってきた方は3人ずつ、Tシャツ作成に移りました。それが終わると、彼ら自身とご家族と一緒の写真を撮りました。写真撮影を行ったのは、このイベントが記憶に残るものになることを願ってのことです。写真が出来上がると、私たちはフレームに入れたものをお渡しいたしました。今後も生徒の皆様に大切な思い出ができるよう、最善を尽くしていきます。
Once again we followed the same format of holding the event for smaller groups. Two groups of 10 people participated in the event. We also had the children wait outside the building until it was their turn to enter the craft area in groups of 3. Once they completed the craft, they then went into the studio and had professional pictures taken of themselves and with their families. We wanted to create memories that will last a lifetime.
Once the pictures arrived at Spring Learning Studio, I mounted them in frames and gave them back to the students. The reaction from all of you was priceless. Thank you for going with the flow. We will continue to try our best to make cherished memories for all of our students.

6 くじ引き大会 Raffle Club
ハロウィンイベントにご参加いただいた方は、くじ引き大会にご参加いただけます。ハロウィンイベントでは、Spring特製バッグとお作りいただいたTシャツ、Happy Valleyのポスターをお渡ししました。バッグとTシャツをご着用の上ご来校いただくことが、毎月のくじ引き大会への参加条件となります。皆様にお楽しみいただけるものなので、ぜひ続けていこうと考えています。
Kids that joined Spring Learning Studio’s Halloween event were automatically eligible for the Raffle Club. At the Halloween event, we gave out Spring Learning Studio bags, their own custom made shirts and a Happy Valley Phonanimals Poster…. Whenever the students brought their bag or wore their shirt they were entered into the Monthly Raffle. This was a lot of fun for everyone so we will continue to do it!

7. 2020年クリスマスイベント – ロボットペインティング Christmas Robot Painting
少人数でのイベントということを遵守しつつ、何名にご参加いただけるかを決めたのち、私たちは木製ロボットペインティングイベントを開催しました。こちらでも、皆様の安全のため、2グループに分かれての開催となりました。このイベントでは、私たちはすべて準備したのち、子供たちへのサポートを行いました。ほぼすべてのイベントで。私たちは指針に従うか、決まったイベントを行っていました。しかし、今回のイベントはルールも指針もありません。多くの意味でこのイベントは素晴らしいものでしたが、生徒たちの独創性を見ることができました。彼らの独創性は輝いており、出来上がったものも良いものばかりでした。子供たちが何の制約もなく何かを作り上げることは特別なことであり、私たちはこれからもこのようなイベントをもっと開催していきたいと考えています。
Sticking with our small groups, we then announced the Wooden Robot Painting Event. We decided to break the groups into 2 to ensure everyone’s safety. For this event, we basically set up all the supplies, supported the kids where they needed it, and let them do what they wanted. For most of our events, we followed a guideline or we showed the students how to do certain activities. But for this event, there were no rules and no guidance. In some ways, this was our best event yet because we had an inside look into our students’ own creativity where they did what they wanted. Their creativity shined through and the results were very cool to see. Letting children create with no rules in place was special, and we hope to do more events like this.

最後に Final Thought
Springを引き継いだとき、とても大きな仕事だと思っていました。イベントは文化を作り上げる重要な部分であり、英語を学ぶ特別な場としてあり続けられると自信を持っていました。成し遂げられるという自信はありましたが、私は有意義な思い出を作るという目標を持っていました。Springの運営が軌道に乗り始めたとき、コロナウイルスが拡大しました。2020年を乗り切るのは簡単なことではありませんでしたが、意義のあるものでした。1年を振り返ると、この困難な期間を一緒に乗り越えてくださった皆様に、深く感謝しております。この思いはSpringの文化の中に、大きく残っていくでしょう。ポジティブな気持ちというものは、伝染していきます。私たちから、その気持ちが皆様にも伝播していきますように。皆様をこのコミュニティに迎えることができ、とても感謝しています。
When I took over managing Spring I had big shoes to fill. Events and crafts were always a big part of the culture and I was confident that we continue to make it a special place to learn English. Even though I knew our team could do it, I had a goal to ensure that meaningful memories were created. Just as I was starting to get comfortable with how to do this at Spring Learning Studio, Covid-19 hit. It wasn’t an easy road to get to the end of 2020 but it certainly was interesting.
Looking back on the year I still feel incredibly grateful that all of you stuck by us during such difficult times. Gratitude has, and will continue to be, a big part of Spring Learning Studio’s culture. We are grateful to have you all in our community.
We must accept that we will face challenges going forward. We are jumping into 2021 with the optimism that things will only get better from here. We will continue to host fun and safe events as long as we can and we have big plans. For now, though, we have to stay the course, keep taking steps to ensure everyone’s safety and make sure that we continue to make learning English fun. No matter what happens, we will make sure that 2021 is a very special year for ALL of the Spring Learning Studio Community.
困難に立ち向かわなくてはいけないというのは、私たちにはどうしようもないことです。状況はここからはよくなっていくばかりだと信じ、ポジティブな気持ちと忍耐を持って2021年を迎えましょう。これからも安全で楽しいイベントを、できるだけ開催していきます。もちろん、コロナウイルスが終わり、またイベントを開催できることを期待しておりますし、大きな計画もあります。しかし今は、今までのやり方を守り、皆様の安全確保と、英語を楽しく学べる場であり続けていきます。何が起ころうとも、2021年は皆様にとって特別な1年にいたします。
